A Juried Photography Exhibition at The Altama Museum of Art & History

The Altama Museum invites photographers of all ages and experience levels to submit original work for our upcoming juried exhibition, Where the Light Falls: Roots & Roads in the South. This exhibit explores the Southern experience through light, heritage, memory, and the paths we travel—both literal and symbolic.

We welcome a wide range of interpretations and encourage you to share the stories that connect you to this place and its people.

  • Submission Deadline: Early bird July 11; Final July 25

  • Artwork Drop-Off Deadline: July 25

  • Exhibition Dates: August 14-September 24.

  • Opening Reception & Awards: August 14 at 5-7pm; awards at 6:00pm

  • Artwork Pick-Up: September 26-October 3

    All age groups will be juried separately, and selected works will be shown together. Judging will be based on number of submissions.

Entry Guidelines:

  • Open to all Georgia-based photographers or those with ties to the South

  • Up to 3 submissions per person

  • Color or black & white, digital or film accepted

  • Work must be original and taken by the artist

  • Work must have no watermarks or logos

  • Artists are responsible for printing and framing work (gallery-ready). Unframed print size must be between 4x6 inches (minimum) and 20x30 inches (maximum). No clip frames, sawtooth hangers, or unsecured mounting—wired or D-ring hanging preferred. Travis at the Frame Gallery/Equipped (119 SE Main Street, Vidalia) has graciously offered a discount to those participating in this exhibit! He knows our specifications, and will be glad to help you if your work is not already framed. Please make sure to get your photos to him as soon as possible, as he will need time to complete the custom framing process.

  • The Altama Museum reserves the right to reject any entry.

How to Submit:

Drop off your submissions to the museum with:

  • A short statement (2–4 sentences) per image, relating it to the theme.

  • Entry form

  • Identification tag on back (will be provided upon drop-off)

Entry fees must be paid by Thursday, July 24 and submissions delivered to the museum on or before July 25. No entries will be accepted after this date without prior approval.

Entry Fee:

  • $15 per artwork entered

  • Early bird price $12 per artwork

  • Member price $10 per artwork—contact museum for code

Students under age 18 receive one free artwork entry ($15 for each additional artwork entered).

There will be no refunds on entry fees.

Awards:

Juried by a panel of artists and professionals, awards will be presented in the following categories:

·        Adult Division

·        Youth Division (13–17)

·        Junior Division (12 & under)

People’s Choice Award

  • All accepted works will be eligible for a Community Vote during the exhibition. Visitors will cast ballots for their favorite, and the winner will receive the People’s Choice Award and a featured spotlight on our website and social media. Visitors may cast their ballot in person at the museum (one ballot per visit). People’s Choice Award will be announced at the end of the photography exhibition (September 24).

 

Jurying Criteria:

Submissions will be judged based on:

  • Relevance to Theme – Southern light, roots, roads, and personal or regional connection

  • Artistic Merit – Composition, lighting, color/tone, and creativity

  • Emotional Impact – The story or feeling the image conveys

  • Technical Quality – Clarity, detail, and resolution

  • Originality – Unique or personal interpretations of the theme
