About Us

Brazell House Sketch Boxed.jpg

In 1980, citizens of Vidalia came together to start a public art gallery—the Altama Gallery, Ltd. Four decades later we are…

The Altama Museum of Art & History*

The Altama Museum is housed in the 1911 Brazell House near downtown Vidalia, Georgia. On the National Register of Historic Places, the Neoclassical gem is marked with enormous columns and inviting porches. Inside is an array of 20th century Southern Art, antique prints, fine furniture, historic costume and an exhibit of Girl Scout history curated by the Sweet Onion Service Unit of Girl Scouts. We also boast one of the largest collections of Staffordshire porcelain on public display in the nation.

A typical season includes fine art and historical exhibits, gallery openings, concerts, classes, artist markets, and special events. The historic home is also available for civic meetings and social events. Programming is designed to spark conversation and encourage learning for all ages, ethnicities, genders, and capacities.

Our mission

The Altama Museum of Art & History endeavors to promote artistic expression, preserve regional history, and provide discovery and educational opportunity to strengthen and inspire our community.

*The Altama Museum of Art & History is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity. All donations over $50 totaled annually are tax-deductible.

“Art and culture are essential elements to a thriving community. While the museum is a beautiful and thoughtful representation to where we have been, it also serves as a point of progress by providing classes, promoting local artists, and generally keeping art alive in the heart of our city. “
